A Green Walled Garden
The client wanted a walled garden to complement his large country house and a design for the scheme was considered using a traditional perimeter brick wall, but cost was an issue. During a chance meeting with the client hedges and ivy walls were suggested as a more economical alternative. These were used instead of the more expensive brick walls therefore allowing the landscaping costs to fall within budget. The garden was designed to fit within a natural enclave in the woodland, adjacent to the house.
A curved path connected the garden to the stone paved terrace with a large reflecting pool with central fountain. This breaks up the path length and provides a special feature which can be viewed from the stone terrace/conservatory area.
Drainage was installed, the site contoured and foundations laid for the construction of the circular paths. To the centre of the garden a large timber framed glasshouse was constructed which the paths connect to. Raised beds built from vertical oak sleepers provide attractive detail and contrast in the garden levels. A large oak framed pergola to the perimeter of the garden reinforces the circular theme with ivy clad frames and yew hedges.
