Hedging

Here at Wilkinsons, we stock many varieties and different sizes of hedging plants all year round, which are ideal for a range of uses. If you’re unsure which hedging is right for your garden, our staff will be more than happy to advise you.

Bare root hedging is only supplied when completely dormant and typically available from November to February (depending on the year). They are deciduous so tend to look bare but are a very popular choice, as you get a lot of plants for your money and are offered a very economical way to plant a long length of hedge. Planting early in the season gives your hedges the best chance to establish, whilst there is still some warmth in the soil. These are available in many varieties, including Crataegus Monogyna (Hawthorn), Prunus Spinosa (Blackthorn), Rosa Canina (Dog Rose), Fagus Sylvatica (Beech) and Carpinus Betulas (Hornbeam).

Root ball plants are grown naturally and are scooped out of the ground by a machine, which cuts a ball around the root. Then they’re wrapped in a hessian sack which is left on the plant when replanted. This then naturally decomposes in the ground. Root ball plants are available at a close time to bare root and similarly thrive when planted earlier in the season, needing regular watering in their first year. Varieties we tend to stock are Taxus Baccata, Prunus Rotundifolia, Thuja and Prunus Lusitanica. Potted hedging plants are available all year round in various species and sizes. They are a more expensive way of establishing a hedge, but ideal for an instant, more mature hedge. They are available in many varieties such as Leylandii, Thuja and Prunus.

Two of our most popular hedging types are Prunus Lusitanica and Taxus Baccata – read more about them below.

Prunus Lusitanica (Portuguese Laurel)

Prunus Lusitanica Angustifolia has dark green pointed leaves on deep red stems. In the summer it has small white flowers and red fruits. It is easy to grown in all soils and very hardy, making it a very popular choice.

We generally stock plants from 30cm height in a 2-litre pot with a range of sizes up to 200cm+ plants in large pots.

Unless there is significant rainfall, water regularly until the plants are established. Trim to shape/height at least once a year. More frequent trimming promotes bushier/denser growth.

Popular Hedging:

  • Crataegus Monogyna (Hawthorn) – Very dense thorny barrier
  • Fagus Sylvatica (Beech) – Deciduous but retains foliage all Winter
  • Prunus Rotundifolia – Vigorous Evergreen hedge
  • Taxus Baccata (Common Yew) – Dark green evergreen, red berries

Taxus Baccata

A classic conifer hedging choice, a dark evergreen hedge with bright green spring growth and autumnal red fruits. This requires plenty of watering in the first couple of seasons and is suited to many soil types.
