Case Study: From Paddock to Memorial Rose Garden
The Brief

Our client wanted to transform a paddock area into a formal memorial rose garden in honour of his late father. The design was centred around creating a grand arrival to the house, with a clear sense of structure, focal points, and long-term vision. The customer brought a set of sketch ideas to us, which we refined and developed into a full design.

Our Approach

We worked closely with the client to ensure his vision was realised while enhancing the design with practical and aesthetic improvements. The garden was carefully planned to combine strong geometry, seating areas with views across to the Cleveland Hills, and natural features that link the garden to the surrounding landscape.

The Works

Pathways: A central brick-edged gravel path creates a strong axis through the garden, leading directly to the new gate which will connect to a future wildlife meadow project.

Pergolas & Seating Areas: Timber pergolas were installed to frame seating areas, offering structure and views across the Cleveland Hills.

Water Feature: A circular stone water feature forms the heart of the garden, adding movement and a calming focal point.

Rose Beds: Generous beds were prepared ready for the client to plant his chosen roses, creating a living memorial that will grow in significance year after year.

Stonework: Locally sourced stone from the site was repurposed for steps, edging, and rock detailing, grounding the design in its setting.

Wildlife Planting: Mixed wildlife hedges were planted to provide berries and habitat for birds, ensuring the garden contributes to the wider ecology.

The Result

The paddock has been transformed into a structured memorial garden that balances formal design with natural elements. With its rose beds, central water feature, and strong pathways, the space creates a meaningful tribute while offering tranquil seating areas to enjoy far-reaching views. The central path leads onward to the gate, ready to connect with next year’s planned wildlife meadow, ensuring this garden continues to grow and evolve as part of a bigger vision.
