Modern Porcelain Patio with Contemporary Style Fencing

Darlington

Concept to completion: 5 weeks

Planning

The customer required a modern, private garden to use as an entertaining space. This was achieved through a design that comprised of a contemporary grey porcelain patio, horizontally boarded fences (painted grey), and creative planting. The garden was overlooked by houses, so the contemporary style fences near the patio area were to establish a more private seating area. A colour drawing and 3D illustrations were created to help the customers visualise the garden.

Progress

The area was excavated, infilled with dolomite and compacted with a whacker plate vibrator, to achieve solid foundations that provide longevity. The porcelain paving was laid on the stable foundation. Additionally, the manhole cover was recessed in order to continue the flow of paving without interruption and make it more aesthetically pleasing. Evenly spaced feature stepping stones were positioned in one of the gravel areas. Lastly, new cultivated turf was laid with a feature circle of wildflower turf to add colour throughout the seasons.

Completion

A white gravel was chosen for the gravel areas, as this was in keeping with the ultra modern patio area and contrasted nicely with the grey paving. The planting in the gravel areas was also contemporary, planted predominantly with grasses, topiary and tall thin conifers. Whereas, the borders surrounding the newly laid lawn were curved and planted with a more traditional look in order to give the garden a homely feel. Many of the plants chosen for the soil borders were selected as they grow tall and act as a screen from neighbouring gardens.
