Get Creative with Containers

At Wilkinson’s we’ve seen an increase in the love of container gardens over the last year with more and more of our customers adding potted plants into the mix. From adding more plants to your driveway to brightening up a yard space, pots and containers can be a great way to add a bit of flair and interest into your existing space.

Potted plants aren’t without their hang-ups, they’re less self-sufficient needing regular watering and feeding but with care they’re still an ever-popular choice. So, what are the benefits and why are more and more people falling back into buying pots?

Certain plant varieties such as mint, lemon, and periwinkle, are invasive species and it’s not uncommon to plant a small specimen and find it taking root in another part of the garden. Containers can be great for this as to keep them under control by quite literally keeping them contained!

Planters can also be used to add distinction to specific areas of your garden by arranging them in such a way that it creates a path or barrier. They’re also great for concealing unsightly items such as drains whilst still allowing for easy access should the need arise.

So, what can you grow in your planter? As mentioned above herbs like mint are great for this as well as other common vegetables which you’ll actually use in your kitchen such as tomatoes and lettuces. Dahlias also do very well in pots and with the variety of colours you can purchase, with the pot styles to match, it’s a great way to cultivate the bulbs.

Bamboo is another great one to restrict to container as it will stop it taking over an area of your garden. As well as looking stunning in pots some bamboo species grow extremely well in pots as. Citrus is another great one to grow in pots as this gives you the ability to bring the plant inside in the cooler months meaning that this lovely smell can permeate your home.

Those varieties that stay outside over winter can also be cared for whilst still in their pots. Please read our post ‘Preparing for a Winter Wonderland’ for specific tips on preparing pots and planters for winter from our director Simon.
