🌱 What to Plant in October for Spring Colour

October may feel like the garden is winding down, but it’s actually one of the most important months for planting. By getting bulbs, hardy veg, and evergreens in the ground now, you’ll be rewarded with fresh colour and growth just when you need it most; in the early months of spring.

At Wilkinsons, we always say that autumn planting is about investing in your garden’s future. The soil is still warm from summer, there’s plenty of rainfall, and plants can establish strong roots before winter sets in.

🌷 Bulbs for Spring Displays

October is prime time for planting spring-flowering bulbs. Try:

  • Tulips – plant in well-drained soil for a burst of colour in April and May.

  • Daffodils & Narcissi – cheerful yellow and white varieties thrive in borders and containers.

  • Crocus – one of the first signs of spring, perfect for naturalising in lawns or rockeries.

  • Hyacinths – fragrant and colourful, ideal near paths and patios.

Tip: plant bulbs at a depth of about three times their height, pointy end up!

🥬 Hardy Winter Veg

If you grow your own, there’s still time to get some veg in the ground for an early spring harvest:

  • Garlic – thrives in the cold and will be ready by early summer.

  • Onions & Shallots – plant sets now for crops next year.

  • Broad Beans – hardy varieties can overwinter and crop early.

These crops don’t mind a chill and will give you a head start in the kitchen garden.

🌲 Evergreens for Structure

Evergreens keep your garden looking alive through winter and provide structure year-round. Consider:

  • Box and Yew – for neat hedging or topiary.

  • Holly and Skimmia – add berries and winter interest.

  • Lavender and Rosemary – hardy, fragrant, and great for pollinators.

Evergreens are also excellent for wildlife, giving birds and insects shelter when they need it most.

🌼 Why Plant Now?

Planting in October takes advantage of warm soil and reliable rainfall. Roots develop strongly before growth slows in winter, meaning plants are well-prepared to burst into life once the days lengthen.

At Wilkinsons Landscapes & Plant Centre, we believe a beautiful spring garden starts with autumn effort. Whether you’re after a splash of colour, homegrown crops, or reliable structure, October is the perfect month to plant.
