Get your garden in order for spring

It’s that time of the year again! Spring is fast approaching, our plants and gardens are ‘waking up’ and often has us looking ahead to the year ahead, and finally achieving that ‘dream garden’.

February’s garden jobs

  • Clear leaves; brush, rake or hoover away last year’s dropped foliage from your garden. Doing so prevents rotten foliage turning to sediment in all the wrong places, potentially creating slippery surfaces.
  • Split compacted perennials; dig out sections of old perennials and transfer them around the garden if required or even share with a friend.  Splitting perennials gives them room to grow and encourages vigorous spring growth.
  • Prune deciduous trees and fruit trees. February is the perfect time to do this, pruning the tree correctly will encourage strong growth, giving better fruit and flowers.  Taking out weak stems and crossing branches will also discourage the onset of diseases.
  • Now is a good time to be planting spring bulbs, really easy to do and gives a very satisfying result when the weather begins to turn up.
  • With the weather being generally cold & wet, February is a very good time to carry out maintenance repairs, fixing broken fences, gates, pergola tops.  Doing so now will free up time to enjoy the garden when the weather is better.
  • Clear vegetable patches and prepare the soil to get them ready for the growing season.
  • The winter is an excellent time to plant. With the weather been colder and wetter the plants are less likely to be stressed through lack of water and root damage. There is also money to be saved through taking advantage of the bare root season.

If you are feeling stuck and our list of garden jobs for February has left you feeling bewildered, then please do not hesitate to get in touch. We cover all aspects of landscape gardening, including seasonal maintenance.

One of our friendly and helpful team will be happy to assist you as best that they can.  Wilkinsons Landscapes has been designing bespoke gardens, to make dreams come true since 1981. Find out more about who we are.
