What Jobs to Do in Your Garden Right Now (April UK Edition)

April is one of the most important months in the UK garden.
Get things right now, and you’ll set yourself up for a summer where your garden actually works. Leave it too late… and you’ll spend June playing catch-up.
Here’s what we’d be focusing on right now.
1. Get Your Lawn Back Under Control

After a long, wet winter, most lawns are looking tired.
Now’s the time to:
First proper cut (not too short)
Edge your borders (makes an instant difference)
Over-seed any patchy areas
Why it matters:
A good lawn early in the season saves you months of frustration later.
2. Clean Your Patio (Properly)

You’d be surprised how many patios we see that just need a proper clean to look brand new again.
Pressure wash (carefully! Especially with sandstone.)
Consider using black spot remover
Re-sand joints if needed
Check for movement or sinking
Tip: If it still looks tired after cleaning, it might not be dirt — it might be the material or age.
3. Sort Your Borders Before They Explode

Everything is about to grow… quickly.
Now is your window to:
Weed thoroughly
Define edges
Add fresh soil or compost
Get planting underway
Why it matters:
A couple of hours now saves weeks of work in May and June.
4. Think About How You’ll Use the Space This Year

This is the bit most people skip.
Before summer arrives, ask yourself:
Where will we sit?
Do we actually like that space?
Is there enough room for people?
If the answer is “not really”, now is the time to fix it — not mid-July.
5. Tackle the Small Jobs You’ve Been Ignoring
You know the ones:
Wobbly slabs
Broken fence panels
That step that’s slightly off
They don’t fix themselves and they always become bigger jobs later.
Final Thought
April is less about perfection and more about momentum.
Even a few small jobs done now can completely change how your garden feels in a month’s time.
If you’re looking at your garden and thinking it needs more than just a tidy-up, you’re not alone. This is the time of year those bigger ideas start to take shape.
